Proud
to return for a second season with Milton. Former AA and AAA player with over
20 years of experience as a teacher and coach. Committed to a philosophy built
on discipline, teamwork, and personal growth both on and off the ice. Focused
on skill development, strategic play, and creating a competitive, supportive
team environment.Rick McMartin
Coach
Rick is entering his 16th
year of coaching girls and boys hockey, ranging from HL to AA levels, and is
finishing his first season as a non-parent. In addition to coaching, he serves
as a referee and is a Development 1 Coach Evaluator with Hockey Canada.
Rick grew up playing competitive hockey in Mississauga and
Oakville as a defenseman. His experience as a player shaped his understanding
of the game and strengthened his commitment to developing well-rounded athletes
both on and off the ice.
He strives to create a positive, competitive atmosphere where
players are motivated to buy into his program. Rick emphasizes a strong work
ethic, skill development, and team play, while challenging athletes to reach
their full potential individually and as a team, and most importantly, having
fun.
Some of Rick’s earliest memories are of going to the rink with
his parents. However, his most meaningful hockey moments have come from taking
his own daughter and son to the rink, coaching them, and passing along his love
for the game. He is incredibly proud of his children as they continue to play
hockey away at school, and that his daughter is now coaching U11 girls hockey.
Rick looks forward to continuing to develop players and
instilling in them the same passion and love for the game that hockey has given
him.Shawn Benn
I began my coaching
career at 16 and am Coach
Level 2 Trained, Checking
1 Trained, and Development
1 Certified.
Over the years, I’ve coached players at every
level—from House League to High School boys and girls—with four trips to OFSAA
along the way.
Over the past 12 years, I’ve been part of the North Halton
Twisters organization, progressing through House League, DS, and into the Rep
program.
During my time at the Rep level with the North Halton Twisters, I also
served as an assistant coach with the Winterhawks. Most recently, I was the
head coach for a Milton House League team as well as the Milton U14 Select team. These
experiences have allowed me to grow as a coach while working within highly
competitive environments.
My coaching philosophy centers on one core
belief: development comes first. While winning is always exciting, true success
is measured by player growth—improved skills, stronger hockey IQ, confidence,
effort, and a commitment to being a great teammate. I am dedicated to helping
every athlete advance both technically and mentally, preparing them to compete
at the next level. I bring a positive, energetic, and supportive approach
to every practice and game. I believe players perform at their best when they
feel encouraged, challenged, and valued. My coaching environment emphasizes
hard work, resilience, and learning through mistakes. I strive to make the rink
a place where players feel motivated, confident, and excited to contribute to
the team.
I’m excited to see the effort, energy, and passion each player
brings to the upcoming evaluations. My goal is to ensure every athlete makes the
most of this opportunity and walks away proud of their performance.
