PeeWee AE White Winterhawks exceed fundraising goal - now able to help three children in Uganda
In December, the PeeWee AE White Winterhawks capped off a successful charity fundraiser as part of their efforts to give back.  The team partnered with a charity called One4Another, who facilitate surgeries for kids in Uganda with mobility impairments such as club feet.  The program, called "The 18th Man," paired the Winterhawks up with 13-year-old Brian.

To raise funds for Brian's surgery, the boys did extra chores and held a jersey raffle with several jerseys donated by  individuals looking to support the effort.  In all, the team raised $4,200, well over their target, which enabled the team to provide additional funds to Brian's family, and to help two more children, Shafik and Benefasio, with similar mobility challenges.

In Uganda, incidences of club feet are roughly the same as in Canada (about 1 in 1,000), though some families lack the financial means to have it repaired. In Canada, club feet issues are generally fixed before a child is able to walk.

In addition to the fundraiser, the boys also wear helmet stickers bearing Brian's name, and his name appears on the lineup card posted by the coach in the dressing room.  This serves to remind the boys of their 18th Man, that playing hockey is a privilege, and that wearing the Winterhawks jersey comes with responsibilities that extend beyond the ice.

In addition to this effort for the 18th Man, the team has also carried out awareness activities for breast cancer awarenss, Remembrance Day and Movember.
